ABM (Association of breastfeeding mothers) was founded in 1979 by a group of mothers experienced in breastfeeding counselling. It gained charity status in 1980 since when it continues to grow throughout UK. Members are mainly mothers who are or have breastfed their babies. Others include health professionals such as midwives and health visitors.
It is the aim of ABM to promote the physical and psychological health of mothers and children through education in the techniques of breastfeeding, and to advance the education of the public on the health benefits of breastfeeding. It offers help through Counsellors, and Mother Supporters, operates a 24 hour national telephone helpline (020 7 813 1481), offers conselling by letter or email (info@abm.me.uk) and if necessary/practical home visits can be arranged. It also runs a comprehensive website (
http://www.abm.me.uk) offering information, research findings, articles, contacts, tips and other related items of interest.
ABM relies on grants, donations and subscriptions to sustain these activities.
