P.I.D. following IVF "procedures"

Anyone out there contracted pelvic inflammatory disease following cyst asp, e/c or e/t?

If so did your clinic accept responsibility and make amends in any way? Or did you find it difficult to apportion responsibility?

I'm asking as I'm due for my follow up in a week or so and want to know what "tack" to take. My local hospital (where I spent 4 days on IV antibitoics!) has said it can't be from anything else and would have to have been from one of the ivf procedures.... They're writing a letter to take with me.

Any feedback appreciated... biggrin2

the trouble with PID is it can lie dormant and something can reactive it

i doubt your clinic would except responability for us, i see you had a bilateral salpingectomy why was this?

Hmmm... I know what you mean, but I never had it before Kar, or any other kind of internal infection (bar cellulitis following surgery last year).

My tubes were removed coz of mesothelioma tumours strangulating them! Surgeon said they'd tried their hardest to untangle them in theatre, along with removal of scar tissue (from previous surgeries) but decided the risk of ectopic too great.

I've had PID for years without knowing as the symptoms are so vague. It first occured following my m/c in 1998, I was in hospital overnight 6 months later with suspected appendicitis but they did no scans or anything to check, they sent me home the day after with pain relief. So for the last 10 years I've had this disease knackering up my reproductive system. All of the niggles, back ache and nausea since then I just put down to AF symptoms. I had a bad flare up the other week and had to get AB's. I think it flared up through having my lap & dye in June as I've never had one before. The symptoms of the PID have definatley worsened since my op.

Hope you get some solid answers from the clinic hun, good luck xx

When I was 19 (along time ago) I was rushed into hospital with an Ectopic Pregnancy and when the surgeons had operated they came round and said 'oh by the way, did you know you had P.I.D?' Uh, no, I didnt but that may have explained why I had the ectopic in the first place and why I cant have anymore children now. I was told by my own g.p for years that it was re-occurring Cystitis and he was inappropriately treating me for the wrong thing.

These things hould be taught at school as this may be the reason I am not conceiving now. Who knows?!

Got my dishcarge letter from the hospital today and it listed "gynae procedures" as the cause of my PID. :riv2:

So.... how do I handle that at my meeting with the consultant at IVF clinic on Tues... Any suggestions folks? :hmm:

Hi Chatterbox,

Well, is there something that they could offer you as "compensation" - free treatment if you're there for your next attempt maybe ?(? Or a refund for the last tx?

Just remembered actually that my clinic made me sign some sort of disclaimer saying that infection is a potential risk for EC procedures... best check any sort of paperwork you might have signed so they can't fob you off that it's just "bad luck"!

Ahhh sh!te you're probably right Scottie... everyone signs so much stuff at the outset... the disclaimer's bound to be in there somewhere isn't it! :cross:

Oh well, let's see what they say. I'm more worried about them wanting to leave tx another 4 months or so - or even worse decide I'm too much hassle to treat! :8o:

:hi: i had icsi last may and immediately returning home from ec i suffered excruciating pain in my pelvic region. I was on high antibiobics which caused me to pass out so the clinic told lme to stop them. They didn't offer a substitute for me. The pain started within 1/2 of stopping the last dose of ab's. Since then i have had severe pelvic pain just before or during af. Could this be pid and if so how do i go about getting treatment? is there anything natural i could try?

thx

if you suspect PID get to your gp and tell them and i do mean asap

nothing natural will work , you will need antibotics

it might not be and could be your ovaries settling but please get checked out ASAP

thx kar and chatterbox. gave meself a kick up the bum and went gp. he was a new locum dr and i don't think he knew what i was trying to explain. he kept asking me if i were a nurse cos of the way i spoke !! like i knew what i was talking about; which i seemed to more than him :snigger:

neway long story short took urine sample and bloods and given me trimethoprime for an infection i guess. was surprised he didn't think i needed a scan of some sort tho i spose a scan's not gonna tell much more than the bloods etc.

feeling a bit better painwise today and slept well last night so the antibos are helping.

thx for verbal push i needed to get me ass there :)

Glad you're on the antibiotics Sooz.

Make sure you keep an eye on your symptoms and if they don't improve go back. There is a specific protocol of antib's they use for PID (usually a combination of 2 drugs) so push for another appt if pain and temp don't subside.

Glad to hear you're on the mend though. :D
