cutting back on milk intake

Noticed Lachlan is feeding for shorter amount of time at each feed just now.
He has had a cold so I guess it could be that. I also started weaning early, just short of 5m, but have taken it ever so slowly and carefully, so I wouldn't have thought he was cutting back from eating too much, although I did introduce a very small amount of chicken last week, mushed up in a casserole. We've built up to about 2-3 tbl spoons of mush at 5pm and have just introduced a small lunch, but no breakfast yet (mainly because I've not been able to fit it in yet....school hols soon though!). I always b/feed prior to giving his solids.
He pretty much stops feeding 2 or 3 mins after the 'let down' and despite winding etc then won't go back on - he actually hits me sometimes, as if to make clear his point! Then he does this chomping thing with his gums, which I could swear was his way of saying 'had enough milk, want food now', but maybe its just teething or something. (he has been 'gumming' me this last week!).
Anyhow, I guess my worry is that he is cutting back too quickly on his milk intake - I am trying to let him be my guide and he, at the mo, seems to want less. I know its difficult to know exactly how much he is getting, but I worry he is not getting enough.
Here's our rough routine:

7am B/feed
10am (ish!) B/feed
12:30pm B/feed & lunch
2/3pm B/feed
5/6pm B/feed dinner
7pm b/feed

If he is only feeding for a short time at each b/feed, does that seem enough?

Hi Mayo

I do 4 a day now and she only feeds for about 5 mins most times...unless she wants to go to sleep  I think as they get older they get more efficient at getting the milk out, they obviously have lot bigger mouths/ stronger tongues than when little babies.

Your b/f routine is pretty much what I did up to introducing 'proper' food but dropped one feed as she is now taking water too and seemed a bit excessive plus she wasn't bothered!

As long as the little fella is happy I'd go with him

thanks Philippa, he wasn't happy just there when I went to feed him - refused to go on at all, and 'said' no to his lunch too, but I gave his gums a rub with my finger and he then went on boob - maybe teething putting him off ?( I don't remember the big boys going off their milk because of teething - it woke them in the night sometimes, but they still fed (I think they did ...it all gets a bit hazy....memory not what it once was!). He just stayed on for 5 mins again though.
Actually...he has a rash now ....has had since last night, but looks a bit worse /spread to his neck so may go check that out, but am guessing just him getting over whatever cold/virus he had. So maybe still not back to being himself then....maybe that putting him off.....such a guessing game!

HV said rash probably just post viral.
Said that most likely his teeth bothering him and putting him of feeding and also at that age where other things become more interesting than milk.

Ta Kate - I think maybe he didn't get enough yesterday as he woke at 10:30pm looking for milk - been a long time since he woke so soon after going to bed.

hmm.... it would appear AF has just arrived - I wonder if that is why Lachlan been off his milk, or if Lachlan taking less milk has brought on AF ?
I got until 6m before AF returned with Mason too, but only 3m with Harri. Was just saying to hubbie at the w/end that I wondered when it would show up again!

Not sure what was going on with blood yesterday, but not had any more since then -odd!
Lachlan still a bit funny about feeding....should add that I often have to do breast compressions to keep him feeding after let down anyhow as he gets annoyed after 'let down' stops - even that wasn't working last few days, but he seemed to go a bit longer at 10-ish today. He'd woken earlier than normal this morning, at about 6am and had his breakfast feed then, so it does seem like he is hungry, just being a grouch about feeding.....if it is teething causing it, (which is my theory for today :snigger:) then I hope they come soon!
