I donated to Huddersfield. Every drop counts and for teeny babies, donated breastmilk can be the difference between life and death. They are less likey to suffer from gastro enteritis and stomach upsets if they have breastmilk.

The hospital sends you a little container, you take it to the doctors and he fills it with your blood (I got my sister to do mine) and send it back to them. They check for all kinds of nasties and then send you some containers to fill with milk (you can also send milk in sterile containers of your own). Some hospitals can even lend you a breastpump.

You freeze the milk and if you live close to one of the centres, they send someone to collect it. In my case we drove to the hospital with a cool bag full of milk and freezer packs. They freeze the milk and pasteurise it before giving it to the babypuddins.

I got a brill fridge magnet in return

there is one about 30 mins from me. When I phoned them earlier tonight the lady who answered the phone was over the moon i have to call back tomorrow to talk to the lady that runs the department.

Why don't they tell you about this when you are pg or the MWs or HV if you are BF? you don't have to do it but if you can then I am sure more ladies would.

We must of cross posted Nikki! Yes I will do it I would of done it earlier had I of known about it, all of the ladies from my NCT classes are BF and I know 2 of them are going to donate i am sure if i spoke to the others they would also.

I am getting quite emontional about it, I read an article earlier and it was heart rendering x

When my little man was in the nnu, there was a little baby there who was going for adoption, (not sure why, but no-one came to visit). the baby was tiny, and slightly prem(35 weeks i think- i was nosy) and had to be fed formuls as mum wasn't "around". i so wanted this little might to have some breast milk to start him off in life, but it wasn;t to be. iI really believe in breast banks and would have gladly donated if i could have.

I must say Chilli that when I took my milk I had hubby and DD with me. DD was chatting away in her pram and as we walked past those premi babies hooked up to all kinds of equipment with anxious Mums sat by their bedsides, I realised that donating a bit of milk is a pretty easy thing to do when you have a pink, healthy, happy child by your side.

I hope you get sorted as a donor Chilli, it's a lovely thing to do if you have a little extra. They really don't need much so anything you can spare will be put to good use helping those poorly babies thrive.

It's a miracle food that only we can provide. They can put a man on the moon but they can't replace good old boobjuice.

Just make sure no-one turns your freezer off at the switch. I lost a litre and a half of milk when I knocked the plug switch by accident. :rolleyes:

When i was expressing loads everyday I nearly cried when DD refused a 3oz bottle I heated up from the fridge A WHOLE 3 oz WASTED!! I would of had a heart attack had i of lost a litre and a half!

Well I have spoken to the lady from Medway Hospital and she was really nice and very helpful, she is sending me the forms and has even arranged a lady to collect from me to go to her house and then to the milk bank so i won't have to travel to Medway all the time.

Really excited about it, she told me some peope disagree with donating milk as it doesn't come from their actual mother! but for babies born at 24 to 28wks feeding them breast milk is the only option between life or death for them. So pleased I know about this now I am going to a NCT reunion on Saturday and meeting some mums to be so i am going to photo cpy the info she sends me and hand it out, won't hurt will it??

No but then neither is it coming from a mucky old moo cow stood up to its knees in poo. Lets not forget that some essential nutrients in artificial milks are derived from fish eye sockets and mould.

Difficult to say Chilli as I don't do a lot of expressing. But DD is going 4 hourly now so I have plenty of time between feeds to do some additional expressing if I wanted to. Tonight after she fed I pumped about 3oz off as I am trying to get a supply in the freezer again for when she starts to have solids.

i expressed for 17 weeks with joe and oodles of milk stored as he was so tiny...but i couldnt donate as i had a previous blood transfusion

nicu are really crying out for ebm as a premature babies bowels cant tolerate formula very well..no better medicine than bm

Humph. A few weeks ago, I contacted the nearest milk bank offering to become a donor and also to offer a one-off large donation of lots of sterile bags of milk that I have stashed in my freezer. Never heard back from them. Do they want breast milk or not?? Can't say I didn't try. Not impressed.

Had a total of three fresh IVF cycles and three frozen transfers (embryos and blastocysts)
m/c @ 11 weeks in 2007 DS1 and DS2 born from fresh IVF cycles

You can donate if you go abroad too. I was away for a month in January and donated to a local milk bank that were so desperate for milk. They had lots of HIV orphans so they were very happy!

Oooh, I have about 500mls of milk in my freezer and have just spoken to someone at my local unit who is going to pass my details on to someone who will ring me back this week. I am ridiculously excited about this!

Anyone else planning to donate?

I looked into it and really wanted to donate but they wouldn't have me with this damn thyroid problem. I'm not any meds for it though so going to look into it a bit more. I'm a bit confused as to why they said no but perhaps the thyroid hormones are passed into the milk
