Any advice to pass on

Hi all,

Im 27 and my DP35, now we have had all the coongrats we are getting the horror stories......How will you cope, god it will be hell for you etc,
Not that we care how much hard work it is after so much longing.

So i was wondering do you have any hints or tips for the new twin parents to be from what pram to buy tandem V side by side, what to expect at bith, how early / late were you before you went in to labour, any routine tip etc.

Hope you can help by passing on your wisdom.

Thanks for taking time to read this thread,

Hiya hun...........no horror stories its all good!!!

First things first, do what YOU feel is best everyone will give you advice but YOU have to do what you think is best.

Here is what we did.......

First i brought a maclaren buggy, it was most practical for me, you can't have a tandem as the front seat doesn't lie flat!! I don't drive so had to think about getting on the bus, we also aren't keen on 3 wheelers, which tend to be bigger, also have to think about weight.

I breastfed and decided to feed on demand initially, i wasn''t bothered about getting into a routine to quickly, i did feed two at once occasionaly but wasn't keen as i felt like a cows udder!!

When i introduced the bottle i used to feed them together, the easiest way i found was sitting in the middle of the settee with their heads on my thighs and whack bottle in easy peasy!!

Don't worry about everything to much. mine only had about 2 baths in the first 4 weeks 8o i used to strip wash them in a morning!! Just couldn't get into a routine, now they have one evry night, i found from 8 weeks i started to get into a routine.

I had the lavender lamb activty centre from ELC and found this invaluable when they outgrew moses baskets, used to put them on there to sleep play etc. Defo worth investing in. ( if you live near and don't mind second hand you can have mine)

Can't think of anything else at mo but any q's just shout!!

I was 37 and 3 when mine arrived, natuarl birth they weighed in at 6lb 6.5oz and 6lb 9oz. xxx

Hi 1 X baby

I too have had all the horror stories especially about the birth ohhhhh don't you have to have a c section with 2??!!! Was petrified however at my midwife appt earlier this week (twins clinic at hospital) I asked for her honest opinion and the statistics on having to have this and she said that 78% of the twins born in the last year there had been naturally really calmed me down I can tell you!!

Everyone is also initially fascinated that you are having twins then the comments start about how are you going to manage with two? oh god when one wakes up it will wake the other etc etc

Think like Clare said we just have to make our own way through and I am sure its not half as bad as everyone keeps telling us!!

Hope you are doing ok, are you starting to show yet? I am it is already obvious that I am pregnant quite proud of my little bump (soon to be huge bump)

We have 3 sets of twins I've seen regularly at work and one of their mums has had a singleton before. She says the twins are not that much harder to begin with because they can look after each other and calm each other down. The idea that if one starts crying, the other will always join in, is a bit of a myth. They are becoming more of a handful now they are toddling because you need two sets of eyes in the back of your head! She says they have come up with a system of one distracting her while the other gets up to mischief! But she has a lot of support from her mum and various friends.

I would say there three things you need to do now: contact Tamba and start getting advice now,
http://www.tamba.org.uk/
find a friend or a relative who you can contact when you need to to take the babies off your hands even just for an hour if they are driving you mad, and the third is ask anyone who gives you a horror story exactly what they expect you to do, are you supposed to sell one of them on ebay (actually that might not be such a bad idea,LOL)?

Lol mrs jasper!!!

I'm glad you know some people that have had twins I don't know any, however the hospital have joined me to their twins club soo will get to meet other mums at similar stages to me.

It is so weird the different reactions youget when you tell people you are expecting twins!!!

Clare-am so pleased we have you on here to dispel all these awful rumours!!

RE: Any advice to pass on

Hi,

I still learing about twins!!! as mine only only 12 weeks. But, it's so lovely having 2, I have to Out n About twin nipper & it's fab, very light & easy to move, the seats lie flat for newborns, kiddiecare.com is the cheapest.we didn;t like the tandems as they can't see each other & I wouldn't fancy staring at another chair!!!, mine is 77cm wide so fits through most shop doors.

As Clare said do things your way, my mum has helped so much since they were born & shes a bit "old school" like you can't change milk, are they cold, they have wind, blah blah blah, just do it your way & accept help as having 2 newborns to look after on your own is very hard & stressfull!!! I feed them in their boucy chairs on on my bed in a V-shaped pillow, so they can touch hands.

Don't worry about getting into a routine so soon, you will hear lots of women with 1 baby saying they are in a routine but they haven't got 2 babies, we have been in a feeding routine since week 6 & they feed every 3-4 hours, mostly 4 hours.

fertilityfriends.co.uk have friednly twin mummy's to chat.

Molly & Daisy arrived by c-section at 38 wks 4 days weighing 5lb 15oz & 6lb 4oz.

take care

Clare,

Hope you don't mind with the questions........

Did you measure big in your pregnancy with twins?? I am 14 weeks and had the midwife today and she says that I am measuring 20 weeks already is that normal with twins......I mean I assume it is as obviously you have two in there but just thought I would check with the experts!!

Saw consultant who first spoke to us for tests five years ago , wo also delivered my niece who coinsidently is 16 weeks old.
He explained bith options but alo said he would perform C sec with out med reason if I requested due to lengh of time trying to concive and all worry that goes with it, but i dont know, both options scare me big time im kinda playing dumb,

I have scan and midwife on 27th july and consultant and scan on 25th sept booked so far I will discuss options with midwife but any coments greatfully accepted.

OH P.S my DP asks what car would you recommend!!!!!! MEN! hee hee we have a renault clio sprt with a 182 brake horse power bit to fast to cart twins rond and boot a bit smalll.

Hello to all you multiple mummys and mummys to be can I just ask you a couple of questions???

1)instead of moses Baskets am buying a luxuary travel cot by Graco with bassinet level, I intend to sleep the babies side by side width ways in here, do you think thats ok for the first few months???

2)My husband is in the forces and may go away soon after they are born so am going to have to get used to feeding on my own, have decided to bottle feed (sorry), was looking at the bouncers so if i needed to feed both I could use them, but I dont really like them. Then saw the mamas and papas perfect height swing, suitable for newborns and thought this might work, will also keep them away from my choccie labrador whilst am trying to feed, do you think they will work??

3)also have bought the Mamas and papas twin aria pram, this will be ok wont it??? Have bought the foot muffs as it will be winter, but when it gets warmer it converts to a nice light stroller, am gutted though just seen that lovely pram on a previous post, thats lush!! Be really grateful for your advice xxxxxx

Lulu,

Do NOT be sorry for bottle feeding twins, it is such hard work to BF 2 babies at the same time (it was easy for our "Clare" she deserves a medal) I found it very hard lifting 2 babies to my boobs, I only managed 6 days but they had some good stuff, bottle feeding is so much easier when you have 2 babies to feed, I do this in their bouncy chairs, we have the "Kick & Play chairs, we also have the Twin Nippa Out N About pushchair & its fab, so light & fits through nearly all shop doors (so I can still go shopin!!!)

Our twins slept together at the bottom of the cot first of all & now are still in the same cot but at each end & do crash heads sometimes, (will be buying another cot very soon!) you need to put them at bottom of cot not in the middle as they will roll, do you get what I'm saying?!?! :D

Once you start buying you won't be able to stop but then you do need 2 of everything!!!!!

hope this helps you.

Hi chick, A few things.....i know you say you want to bottlefeed, and i agree it is difficult to breastfeed but even if you can manage for a week or so you will be giving them the best possible start, however if you can't no-one will punish you!! I did use two moses baskets, my mom had a travel cot with basinette and mine did fit in their for a while together so think they will be fine.

The mamas and papas aria is great!! I have seen it and its lovely and compact. xx

Thanks for advice, am definately going to b/f for the first week or so as i know it helps their little immune systems. I dont get how to put them in the travel cot together, sorry being really stupid was gonna put them the wrong way round if you get what I mean with feet touching the side of the travel cot, then tuck the blankets around them, or do you put them at opposite ends top and tail??? I've got no hope am confused already!!! Have our main cots already but gonna use travel cot in our room and downstairs etc xxxx

Don't want to confuse you hun but our travel cot has a bassinet too which was fab, but it does have a maximum weight limit of 6kg(i think) so dependig on the combined weight of the bubbas they may not be in it too long. Don't want em falling through now do ya!

Worth checking out hun

were they in normal cots in own room or in one cot in your room???

Got me thinking now as moses baskets are soooooo exspensive for what use you get out of them.

my 2 slept together in moses basket for 6 weeks then they shared a cot until yesterday, & me & DH had the best nights sleep since we have had our 2 angels!!! although Molly had a feed at 2am, I can't believe how they move themselves up their cots, Molly was up the other end this morning & Daisy was turned round the other way!!!!! bless them!! they have been in their own room (together) for 4 weeks.

If you lived nearer you could have my 2 moses bskts, as they were brand new & only used for 6 wks, & as you say there are so expensive, it wouldn't be if buying one!!! you could always buy cots instead of m.bskts?
