natural blue colouring ???

Any ideas on how to make blue icing naturally? Was thinking I could use crushed blueberries but that's going to be more of a purple than blue....it is for a lightsaber birthday cake - he specified it had to be the blue lightsaber or I'd have gone with a red and coloured the icing with strawberries or cherries or something.

None I'm afraid, just the E number ones, had a quick google and found some US sites selling natural blue food colouring, not sure if thats any help? But if its just a small amount as a one off and in a cake he will be sharing, its not going to do too much harm.

thanks...was reading that blue smarties are coloured using a natural colour but its derived from blue green algae (yum!) so not sure if I fancy that even if I can get a hold of it :snigger:
I guess I'll just have to use the fake stuff and be sparing with it.

There are warning signs up at my local reservoir suggesting that it's not safe for dogs to swim in the water if blue-green algae is present. Sounds delightful in Smarties!! :snigger:

Is it a light sabre cake or is the light sabre just part of it? Wondering whether you could use something else in place of the icing light sabre (Fimo?) if it is neccessarily got to be edible?

Hey, its the actual cake that's the lightsaber (to be made from swiss rolls :D) I had been planning a millenium falcon cake which at least would have been mostly white icing (and almost normal cake shape!) but M insisted on the lightsaber! I said to him I could put some figures with lightsabers on an ordinary cake but that met with a look of disappointment....he has the art of manipulation down well (Jedi mind trick ?!).

No ideas but I just wanted to say that the lake near us has that sign as well and the algae smells like farts!

Not great for a cake :snigger:

Good luck on your quest :D

Hi Mayo - Asda do a blue food colouring which is labelled as natural if you have a store near you. Not sure what's in it though!

A light sabre birthday cake sounds fantastic - I must make one for DH he loves his star wars :snigger:

Just make him a cake out of Fimo and when he complains tell him that he said that he wanted a light sabre cake... he did NOT specify that it had to be edible!

hey...I went with the ASDA natural blue colouring in the end, which is the same stuff as in smarties, so blue green algae cake it was!
I still used it quite sparingly, and it makes the perfect 'Iggle Piggle' blue, for future reference :D
