New to forums, need advice!

Hello

I wonder if anyone can give me some advice.

Myself and my husband having been TTC for 15 months and have been to the GP who has referred us to a fertility specialist. I have had all the initial rountine blood tests and to check that I was ovulating (which I was) and my husband has done 2 x SA which showed that he has a low sperm count.

I have now received an appointment to go and see a gynecologist at my local hospital in August but it doesn't say what for? That appointment will have been 5 months after we went for our first GP appointment and I am worried about the waiting times on the NHS. Does anyone know what these are like in Surrey?

The GP said we may be offered artificial insemenation or IVF. I just don't know what to do now. Do I just keep waiting and hope that we find out at the August appointment what the process is on the NHS and the potential waiting times or should we go private? We have a bit of money saved up so it could be an option. At the moment my husband said we should use the NHS but I don't think I could wait for years, even months will be hard :-( I think I could get him to change his mind though as he wants a child just as much as I do.

I am 28 and hubby is 32 so I know we have time but I am very impatient. I know it is a waiting game but I never knew it would be this hard!

Any advice you can give me about waiting times in Surrey and what to expect from the NHS appointments now that we have been referred would be great. Or if you believe we should just go private. I am so confused! ?(

Thanks in advance. x

Hey

Welcome to FZ! I hope you like it here, there is plenty of support and advice to be had!

I'm afraid I am in Hampshire and I have no idea about NHS waiting times in Surrey - I had to go private as I did not fit NHS criteria anyway.

The waiting is hard isn't it? I do understand your impatience to carry on asap but it might be worth at least getting as much advice as you can for 'free', you might not have to wait as long as you think for an initial NHS appointment.

IUI (artificial insemination) will cost around the 1K mark, although possibly a bit more depending on how many drugs/scans you need. IVF could be anything from 3.5K upwards, plus drugs (realistic price is probably more like 5K in total). It is an expensive process so if you are entitled to free treatment I would seriously consider it.

Of course, if you do want to go private then the big advantage is you won't have to wait too long, although it may still take a little while for your notes to be transferred to a private clinic and you might still have to wait to see the consultant - the longest I ever had to wait was 5 weeks.

Hopefully someone in Surrey will be along soon enough to help you out a bit more. Hope you enjoy looking around the forum, it really is a fab place!

:goodluck: to you.

Gracie

Hi, I cant tell you about the waiting times in Surry but I'm sure someone will be able to soon. From my experience and reading others I would say that your first appointment will be a discussion about your initial tests and then possibly an internal examination for yourself. Although you DH has got low SA I expect they will still want to investigate you further before refering you for IVF. I'm afraid the waiting times with the NHS do feel forever and there will be times when you feel like you are getting nowhere.

As for going private its something that we may consider in the future but at the moment we are going to go along with the NHS, I dont cope with infertility brilliantly and dont know how i could handle paying for treatments that could potentially fail. I'm sure that others will be able to give a more balanced argument though. Whatever you choose to do stick around as this site is fantastic xx

Hi I don't know about surry but we are NHS funded and waiting times between appointments etc haven't really seemed any different to those going private. If your entitled to funded treatment Id say go for it!!
When we first got referred we thought it would all take forever but realisticly it all happened so quickly.
