Weight Gain Dropped Right Off

Hey all

Freya is doing really well with her eating so far and seems to be starting to take less milk, although I am still getting up twice a night! I am still BF at the moment.

Anyway, I took her to be weighed this morning and she has only gained a couple of ozs in the last fortnight, this has dropped off quite dramatically as previously she has been gaining anything between 1/2oz to an oz a day. She is now on the move and into everything so am assuming this has something to do with it. I am trying not to panic as she is fine and in perfect health. I just don't know if this is the norm?

She is still in the 50th percentile, although steadily working her way up.

I am trying not to get stressed out about it immediately as I can't really see a good reason to worry but you know what it's like! Comments/advice appreciated! Thank you.

Was the HV concerned who weighed her? From experience, it often has to do with age, becoming more mobile, solids etc…but as they get older, there weight gain slows right down…the last time i got Ben wighed a couple of months ago, he had only put on 1 kilo in a bout 2 months or something similar, but was still on the same curve in the red book!

I do know how hard it is not to worry though as i worry about everything!! :O As long as she is healthy and eating well and still taking milk…i would try not to worry too much. Easier said than done i know!!

Ben is hardly eating any food at the moment and flat refusing to drink any water out of any cup, bottle, etc… and of course i am worrying too!

Hope you are ok hun blowkiss

Thanks Greeny!

The HVs don't do the weighing at our clinic, we do it ourselves and then speak to them if we want to - it's impossible to get an accurate reading as the scales are on wobbly tables and Freya doesn't stay still either anymore. I've not spoken to one because I only just scraped in before the clinic finished. I think I will take her again next week and speak to someone then.

I don't think I've got anything to worry about, she is still following the 50th curve fine and there is nothing wrong with her, I think you're right, it's just down to the fact that she is much more mobile now.

Oh dear, these babies are a worry aren't they, I hope Ben is OK, sending you both :hugs:

Gracie, Hun - the weight gain definitely slows down at this age. C was gaining up to a pound a week for the first while. By the time he was 9-10 months he was only gaining about half a pound a month. Up to 6 months he had been above 97th centile and he dropped below that curve at 8 months.
As long as she is gaining it is fine. If she were staying the same or losing weight, that would be when you start to get worried.

Thanks Rene! :)

I know I shouldn't worry but it's such a big difference! I think I shall take her again next week and speak to a HV - I have avoided them thus far as I don't like them too much and I am not too sure what they will have to say on the matter of BLW! Anyway, F is getting into her food just fine and still BF off me (although not quite as much) so I doubt very much she is going to waste away anytime soon - see my common sense head is talking now - the Mummy head is still going to worry though!!

I would leave it a few weeks Gracie. Did you plot it I her red book? As long as it's not dropped dramatically then there's nothing to worry about. She Soubds like she eats more than Ben!!! She'll control her milk intake and I'm sure she knows exactly what she's doing!!

Hi Gracie

I had the same with Nancy, she piled it on when I first started to wean her then it slowed down to an average gain of about 2 oz a week. When I spoke to the HV about it she said it was normal for the rate of gain to slow down and she told me to get her weighed every 4 weeks instead of every 2. Years ago when I was a baby the rules were your baby should double its birth weight by 6 months and triple it by 12 months, so if you look at it that way it makes sense that it has to slow down a fair bit after they are 6 months.

Thanks Greeny and Polly!

Well, based on the old rules Freya is a real fatty! She's already tripled her birth weight and she only eight months! I need to stop worrying and just carry on, thanks for your advice and comparison with your LOs, I feel much better now.

Hmmm, I think you would have more cake left over without me eating lots, more peace and quiet and since I have to do things in threes, I WILL think of another thing... :cuddle

Whereas without you I would explode from all the words left unused and insane thoughts unexpressed. You are clearly the loveliest and besides it's your thread, so that's that. :D

Eating cake alone is no fun and peace and quite is lonely.

Ditto the rest, I can't write anything anywhere near as eloquent, my lovely friend.
