Thrush :(

I'm feeling dreadful. It appears we have thrush of the nipples (ds mouth)
I'm so uncomfortable and not enjoying feeding at all- my nipples are on fire and itch and when I feed I get deep pain especially after he's been feeding for a while. I've been to the doctors and he has some drops for his mouth nystan and I've got clotrimazole but we've been using since thurs and its getting worse. What do I do? Bf has been fine and comfortable until this so I'm pretty sure latch etc all good. Ds has now started fussing whilst feeding and wriggling about on the boob whilst feeding.

Any help?

Ohh Louise you poor thing, its sounds so painful. I've not heard of thrush there....hopefully someone can give you some tips on the other thread, but just a thought to prevent it from reoccurring, would nipple protectors be any help? I know they are usually for when the nipples are so cracked and sore, but it must prevent direct contact between the baby's mouth and the breast so might be worth a try!

Good luck xxx

Hi honey,
I totally feel for you and understand the pure agony you are feeling :hugs: I haven't got time to post fully now but I will be back in a couple of hours.
What dosage of drug are you taking?
Do you feel the pain deep inside briefly after feeding or constantly?
Xx

It's just a cream bge to put on three times a day (unbranded canestan). Pins and needles itching all the time, hurts when he latches on and then hurts after feeding for a while which is like a deeper pain...the rest is like a surface pain. Nipples are throbbing or itching all the time, are pink and they hurt to the touch or if I accidentally brush them- I'm aware of them constantly if you know what I mean :( he's not feeding as well either :(

Thanks for stopping by to help xx

Ouch! I have had this too and its not nice. It can be useful to let your nipples get some air, not great in these chilly nights but it helps. Hope it eases for you soon.x

Hi Louise,

if you feel the pain is deep inside the tissue, then I wouldn't waste any more time with the cream. Well, carry on with the cram if you want, but I would go back to the dr tomorrow and take this leaflet with you (print it off or take the web address) http://www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/p…et_Feb_2009.pdf. (**link not endorsed by FZ**) and Demand/ask for fluconozole at this dosage! When I went to the drs, talking about thrush, I got fobbed off with them saying my milk ducts were blocked and to massage them. I went back loaded with leaflet and the dr said he'd never given that high a dosage before but I made him read the leaflet and he respected it and prescribed me them. For me, it didn't work as I think I had it really bad and it had gone on for a fair while already. I had had sooo many antibiotics following DS birth, it just wouldn't go. BUt other people have succeeded in breastfeeding long term, so it worth a try. It is still important o treat your LO orally too though, otherwise you just pass it back and forth if outside as well as inside.

I really feel for you as it is pure agony. I was in pain constantly and worse during and after. I would be dreading the feed before, hating the feed during and then in agony after, then the cycle began again. I think the reason they don't feed as well, is because if you are in such pain, you are tense and not relaxed ad this can interfere with your let down and they aren't getting as much milk. Also, does your LO have any signs in his mouth of thrush himself? My LO didn't, but it could still be a bit sore for them I guess.

Don't suffer though, if it's not got better yet at all, then Definitely go back to the drs as it is pure hell feeding with thrush. I used to descibe it as it felt like cut glass inside my boobs and nipples...

I'm so sorry you are suffering with this. jasper had a much better experience with it clearing up though, so fingers crossed ou will follow her path and not mine.

:hugs:

Hi!
BGE great advice, good leaflet, wish I'd seen it!
We had thrush around week 3, it was so bad that it hurt when I showered, but that was the sign that the lactation consultant I'd seen instantly picked up on. We were treated with Daktarin, which is micanozole and comes as cream and gel. The babies had an oral gel and I had cream for nipples, which it's very important that you know you don't have to wipe off before feeding, but obviously don't slather it on just before a feed as it makes it all a bit slippery and hard for them to latch on!

I hope it clears as honestly after a week of using the creams and gels the thrush pain disappeared (ok then I was left with the poor latch pain, but it was never as bad as the thrush) and I am still going with the bf so you can get past it honest!

Oh honey, I hope you woke Dh and got him to do the changing. Perhaps you have mastitis as well as thrush or instead of?? That can make you feel very fluey apparently. Call the doctor this morning and say you can't get to them, you need someone to visit you. Stss how urgent it is as you have a small baby and they aren't feelding well.

Thinking of you sweetie. You're not having an easy time are you? I wish you lived closer to me nd I'd come round and see you. bigkiss

Have you got some tablets for the thrush now? It's essential that you have those as creams/gels won't work on your breasts.

You HAVE to initially

  • Drink 2 lites of water every day

  • Take paracetamol every 4 hours

  • Take acidophilous tablets daily

  • Cut bread and yeast products out of your diet

  • Cut right back on sugar

  • Wash all your bras on a hot cycle or with vinegar

  • Change breastpads as soon as they are damp or ideally go without.

Get some nipple guards to ease this period of feeding.

Has anyone checked your latch?

You need to get fluconazole. Have you seen doctor? Or spoken to one?

Any are GP's so ignorant to thrush. It's not that uncommon and to just suggest you stop breastfeeding is easy for them to say but not very supportive of you. What did they say about how you're feeling? How do they know it's not mastitis?

Big :hugs:

That's very clear bells... I haven't done all those things. In a right pickle tbh...don't know what to do. When I suggested to the doctor about changing to tablets he said that as the nipples are sore its very difficult to treat but that the cream should work. He was kind about it but he was just suggesting that perhaps I would have less pressure on me if I wasn't bf. I'm so confused - it makes me sad to give up as I love to see ds so satisfied etc. but I have thought of giving the Bf up or at least combined feeding. My head is a muddle. The infection so far is in an unknown location so will see what happens over next 24 hours. He said he was more than happy for me to go back if my symptoms changed or got worse etc.
thanks for your help...will show dh this xxx

Could you speak to your HV? In my experience they are much more knowledgeable and supportive with regard to bf than doctors are.

Combined feeding may not help particularly if you are getting mastitus as its best to keep feeding, painful as it is. I really feel for you as I had thrush and mastitus and its so hard to keep feeding. Are you taking any painkillers to help?x

Well if it's thrush and it's that painful inside cream is not going to be enough. Go back and give him leaflet and tell him it's got even worse if necessary, and ask for the fluconazole in that dosage. He has to surely take note of the breastfeeding network. If you don't want to stop bf ing then he should be trying to help that in any way possible.

Honestly gp's can be annoying sometimes. My old dr said to me once when I said my DS suffered badly with wind pains at night and was not a good sleeper. She asked about weaning and I said I was planning on waiting til 6 months to do baby led weaning. She said " oh that's good. Why don't you give him some baby rice?'!!

I find you new to 'tell' doctors what you want them to sometimes!! Which is what you least need to be doing when youre feeling ill and vulnerable!

Huge huggles honey xxx.

Hi - just a very qiock reply from me. I had thrush - ductal. It is agony and I really feel for you. But do not let a doctor persuade tou to give up BF if it's not what you want. as someone mentioned earlier you need fluconazole. I battled thrush for months and had 3 courses of it and cut out the bread, yeast etc. Finally it cleared up and BF was successful. Do go back to the doctor and tell them the drugs you need. My doc was not so good about it at first but it helped that I saw a lactation consultant based at the hospital - she wrote a letter to my GP explaining that I needed fluconazole and the GP finally agreed to it. Hope it clears soon x

The first time I had it I used the cream and drops for ds, and it worked. With DD they suspected thrush when I had a telephone consultation but it went away and I think maybe it was mastitus.

Hi Louise,
Really feel for you. My DD (Fi) had ductal thrush with Lily and again with Samuel. With Lily, it took a long time to clear (I think she had 3 courses of treatment - fluconazole and cream) She managed to continue breastfeeding for almost a year. With Samuel, she recognised the symptoms earlier, and it cleared much faster, although had to go back to gp as she hadn't given her the correct dose. She then got the maximum loading dose and the maximum maintenance dose. That worked a treat. She is now enjoying feeding Samuel. Sounds to me like yours is severe, and would need max dose.
Your baby is fussing at the breast because his mouth is sore - that will get better once both your treatments kick in.
xx

Phoned hv yesterday and due to other tummy bug (hence why I was feelin so bad) I haven't eaten so milk production has reduced and ds was very hungry so have had to top him up with formula. Gutted but hope to get the supply back up hopefully in a few days when I can eat again. Still been offering him the breast. They are still very sore. All gone a bit wrong really. Thanks for your advice and support. I'm at my 6 week check on mon so will ask for different drugs then xx

Louise I wouldn't wait until Monday - get the right treatment ASAP. If you phone your HV in the morning she should be able to get your GP to write a prescription for you.

Louise all the girls said is a great advise. I suffered with it for weeks and it was agony so I do feel for you. I went to see my local BF consultant in the hospital - she gave me all the info I needed about the drugs to ask my GP for and because it was coming from her the GP was happy to prescibe it. Or if your GP is not very helpful - can you go and see another one - maybe a women - she might be a bit more sympathetic. What worked for me was to keep my boobs cool - no bra around the house but the drug are must - you will struggle to get rid off it without them if you are so bad. Hope you get it sort it soon. xxx
