4 week old baby with sticky eye....Advice Needed Please

My DD is 4 weeks old and since last night her eye looks watery and when she's been asleep it has dried gunky stuff around it. The actual eye is not red. Any advise would be appreciated :xxx3:

Congratulations on your new little one!

My little boy had sticky eye when he was tiny and whenever he got a cold he seemed to get conjunctivitis, so I spoke to the doctors a few times about caring for his eyes.

I was recommended to bathe the eyes frequently with clean cotton wool balls and sterile salt water. Only use each cotton wool ball once. Wipe from the part of the eye nearest the nose outwards.

If you spot any hint of redness I'd suggest going to the doc's straight away as an infection will most likely need something stronger to get rid of it. If you do go to the doctor's, don't clean the eye before you go as they will probably want to take a swab.

If it doesn't go away by tomorrow, if it was me, I'd probably go to the doc's anyway just to get it checked out.

Hope this helps and hope it clears quickly!

My DD was the same, she had a sticky eye from birth and it lasted several weeks. It went away on its own in the end and I bathed it with boiled cooled water and also breast milk.

If you are BFing then try a little of your milk on it as it is all powerful!

Hope it clears up soon but if you are worried speak to your HV or GP.

:congrats: by the way!

Thank you both for your advice and reply. :thumbsup2: I'm going to try the breast milk cleaning the eye as my H visitor called today and also suggested this. Seems strange but if it helps then that's the main thing.. [zx050] Again ladies :xxx3:

My DD2 had sticky eyes as a newborn and breast milk cleared it up amazingly well.
