Is it tooth decay?

I am getting myself in a right state as I think DS may have a tooth that has started to decay. I noticed on Friday that it almost looked like there is a chunk missing from one of his back teeth, but not a hole and it does look slightly discoloured with plaque but not brown or black as I would expect decay to be. I have an appointment on Monday but I am so stressed about it and feel like if it is decay I am going to be a mess, I feel like I have failed him in some way. I have tried really hard to avoid this situation having lost a number of teeth to decay myself and have followed all of the advice I was given. He only drinks milk and water, never has chewy sweets but I do allow chocolate and cakes. Feeling like a bad mum at the moment and really hope there is nothing wrong. On top of this he is scared of the dentist so it will be so stressful!!! We have been playing dentists today and reading Peppa Pig book about the dentist and I have pomised a trip to the toy shop after! What if it is decay, there is no way he will sit in the chair for trearment ( the dentist normally checks his teeth standing up!)))) Not sure anyone can give me any advice really, just needed to talk to someone. I actually feel ashamed to tell any of my friends. :-(

Oh honey, don't stress. You don't know for sure yet anyway. And if it is, so what? All you can do is brush their teeth twice a day as best as you can.

Thanks everyone. I know its silly but I see it as a reflection on me as a parent :-( I have had so much dental work myself and just didn't want that for my kids. Xx

Well today's appointment was inconclusive! DS wouldnt lie back in the chair so it waa difficult for the dentist to see properly! He could see that there is a deformity but couldn't say if it was due to decay or not. We have been referred to another dentist where he can be sedated. If it is decay they can then do a filling under sedation. Not the best outcome but not the worst either. I just hope the next dentist we see has a little more patience with children as our current one doesn't have a clue how to speak to kids!!! X

That's not totally bad then. It really pays to have a helpful dentist. Mine is female and is great with O.

I called the dentist today to chase the appointment for the sedation and would you beleive he has been refused as he does not meet the criteriq for seadation under the NHS....I am absolutely fuming! I have waited a few weeks now and if it is decay it will b getting worse. They have booked me in to see the dentist again on Monday so they can attempt to look again. I was in tears earlier and have asked DH to take him to see if he is any calmer with him.. I am thinking of calling my HV as dental health is one of their favourite subjects and she if she can help in anyway. Arghhhh!

Can you try to change dentists? My girls were so distracted by the magic chair and the other cool stuff the dentist showed them that they didn't even notice when he was checking their teeth. Your dentist sounds dreadful!

By some miracle ( and some blackmail!!) DS let the dentist check his teeth and he confirmed it's nit decayed but some enamel has been lost. It was a huge relief and importantly a massive step in the right direction with DS's fear of the dentist. It has scared me so I am back to being super strict about sweet treats!!! Apparently the NHS would only treat him under a general anaesthetic and not sedation but that could only be done if they were extracting the tooth. Complete madness that I couldn't get any help before the tooth needed to be removed!!!! Thanks for your support everyone.xx
